Chandi

Chandi

Because he only has one ivory, Chandi, also known as Eka Danta, stands in the hamlet of Ehetuwewa, Galgamuwa, in the Kurunegala District. Chandi serves as a metaphor for the relationship between humans and the natural world. After more than 50 years of residence, Chandi has assimilated into the local community.

This tale shows how an animal searches frantically for a place to call home where it genuinely belongs even if it has no idea why its environment is getting smaller. It teaches us, as humans, the value of home to all living things on the world, including ourselves, and the need for us to act carefully in order to preserve their existence.

Because of Chandi's past of consuming products from the fields, the locals are concerned. Over the years, he has harmed property and crops by doing this. The local authorities are attempting to steer him away from densely populated areas in light of recent instances.

With a GPS collar, Chandi was removed from his Galgamuwa habitat and transported to Somawathiya National Park in 2009. Chandi persisted nonetheless. He was quite adept at navigating his way home. Over the course of 28 days, he traveled a staggering 243 kilometers. He passed through several locations, including residential areas, yet he managed to return to Galgamuwa.

Chandi persisted even after being relocated to the Horowpathana Elephant Holding Ground in 2015. He made his getaway and returned to Galgamuwa. This demonstrated his deep ties to his hometown. Even when others tried to dissuade him, he didn't allow anything to stop him.

As a donation from the Thai government, the country's government took steps to take the Muthuraja elephant, which had been in the country for twenty-two years, to Thailand.

It was for further treatment of the sick elephant.

The Muthuraja elephant that was taken in this way has been quarantined at the elephant conservation center in Lampan state.

Thai media reports that Muthuraja is recovering after undergoing treatment.

Also, media reports say that Muthuraja shows a more enthusiastic nature and is more attuned to the country's language.

It has been revealed in the initial tests conducted in that country that Muthuraja has developed cataracts and is unable to bend his front left leg.

In addition, the country's reports had stated that he was diagnosed with infected wounds on his back, and there were disorders of the soles and nails.

However, the most senior doctor of the veterinary team who came to take Muthuraja from Sri Lanka had mentioned in a Facebook post today that by the time Muthuraja was taken from Sri Lanka, about 90% of Muthuraja's pus cysts had healed.

It also stated that there were no injuries on the soles of the feet or the tail.

He had thanked the veterinary officers of Dehiwala National Zoo for that.

Meanwhile, the country's government is also focusing on two other elephants donated by Thailand.

The Thai media has also reported that a team including veterinarians will be sent to this country in September to investigate the health condition of the elephants.

elephant comb

What is this "elephant comb"?

Muddy spots caused by elephants roaming in the forests rubbing their trunks on trees and rocks are seen in many places in the forest.

We call such places as places where elephants are brushed. But there is a place where elephants are combed their heads and backs in Maduraoya National Park.

This place is on the left hand side near the road known as Morapana, which is about 3 km from the entrance of Maduraoya Park Headquarters.

In this place, there are two large Haveri banyan trees growing together and there is a hollow eight feet wide and nine feet high located between the two trees.

Elephants passing through this banyan hole have the ability to scratch the top of the elephant's head and back. As the elephants often engage in this hole, no banyan roots grow below that place.

This place will be known as the "Elephant Comb Tree" of the elephants.
